Maths & English Tutor OR SEN Teacher (Alternative Provision)

Alternative Provision in the Newham borough is currently recruiting an SEN Maths & English Tutor or SEN Teacher who has taught Maths & English. This is a full time 5 day a week contract role to start immediately.

Successful and thriving Alternative Provision with outstanding facilities and offers inclusive education to children of secondary and post 16 ages. Students who attend the provision know what is expected of them and have effective resources, support and direction. Class sizes are small, maximum of 8 and with individual 1:1 teaching when required for children. Children require a Maths & English tutor or SEN Teacher because they are unable to access mainstream school or groups at the provision. Children are referred via the inclusion panel and usually this is because they have behavioural needs/ ill-health/ Anxiety SEMH and or learning difficulties. More often than not, children are on Educational Health Care Plans (EHCPs)

Due to an increased number of children on roll, the provision is recruiting either a Tutor or SEN Teacher who can offer Maths & English and / or Functional Skills to children at KS3 & KS4. Some of their post 16 children will also be working at lower levels. In this role you would be planning, marking and delivering weekly sessions and lessons, supported by the child's school. The Tutor will be employed 5 days a week via the agency into this provision and the length of time with each student will have been agreed at the outset. It is important that you have taught children with varied SEN; ie ASD/SEMH/ Anxiety/ ADHD/ ODD/ ADD/ Behaviour Difficulties/ CAMHS/ Learning Difficulties. Additionally you will have worked with children in a educational setting; ie PRU/ Alternative Provision/ Mainstream School /SEN School or Tuition Centre with SEN pupils.

The successful Tutor/ SEN Teacher;

  • Must have worked as either a Tutor or SEN Teacher (minimum of 6 months in one education setting)
  • SEN Experience; ie ODD/ ADD/ ADHD/ PDA/ CAMHS /SEMH /ASD/ ASC /Complex Needs/ Behaviour Challenges
  • Must have experience teaching both English & Maths or Functional Skills
  • Taught children at KS3 & KS4 levels
  • Have worked in an educational setting as either an SEN Teacher or Tutor; ie Pupil Referral Unit (PRU)/ Alternative Provision/ SEN School/ Mainstream School or Tuition Centre (with children with SEN)
  • Able to demonstrate a "Good" Lesson
  • If required, can de-escalate behaviour successfully
  • You are resilient, consistent, empathetic, non-judgemental, have a great sense of humour, creative, able to build a strong rapport with children
  • Free to work immediately in a 5 day a week role
  • Must live in easily commute to Newham
  • In-date Enhanced DBS with the update service OR you are able to pay for a new one immediately
